One of the great misnomers in the dessert world, this "pie" is actually a cake that originated in Boston in the late 19th Century.

But none of that matters when you taste the classic layering of velvety butter sponge, vanilla custard and bittersweet ganache. To put my own spin on the classic, I lightly brush the cake with a rum syrup to bump things up just a bit. How could this not be amazing?!
